Description
A comforting classic, these Swedish meatballs are tender and served in a rich, creamy gravy, perfect for family dinners or cozy weeknight meals.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 lb ground pork
- 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/2 onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp pepper
- 1/2 tsp allspice
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 2 tbsp flour
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, salt, pepper, allspice, and nutmeg. Mix well until evenly combined. Shape the mixture into small meatballs.
- In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, carefully add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides. Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set them aside.
- In the same skillet, sprinkle the flour and whisk for about a minute to create a roux. Gradually add the beef broth, stirring continuously until the mixture thickens.
- Stir in the heavy cream and bring to a gentle simmer, letting the flavors meld together.
- Return the meatballs to the skillet, cover, and let them simmer for an additional 10-15 minutes or until they are cooked through and the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
- Serve hot, ideally alongside creamy mashed potatoes or al dente pasta.
Notes
If you need a healthier option, consider using ground turkey instead of beef and pork. Make extra gravy if you love sauce. Don’t overmix the meatballs to keep them tender.
