Description
A rich and creamy dish made with layers of potatoes and gooey cheese, perfect for family gatherings or cozy dinners.
Ingredients
- 2 ½ pounds russet or Yukon gold potatoes
- 3 tablespoons butter
- ½ onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 ½ cups heavy cream
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme (or dried)
- 3 cups cheddar cheese, grated
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a large baking dish.
- Thinly slice the potatoes to about ⅛ to ¼ inch thick and set aside.
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the chopped onions and sauté until softened, about 3 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic and thyme, cooking until fragrant.
- Sprinkle in the flour and gradually whisk in the heavy cream until smooth. Season with salt and pepper, and add a pinch of cayenne for some kick, if desired.
- Stir in the grated cheese until melted and creamy.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the greased dish, then pour half of the cheese sauce over them. Sprinkle on half of the remaining cheese.
- Repeat with the rest of the potatoes and sauce, finishing with the remaining cheese on top.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 20 minutes or until golden brown and bubbly.
Notes
For a twist, add sautéed mushrooms or mix in steamed broccoli for a veggie-packed version.
