Description

An elegant breakfast casserole featuring flaky croissants, savory custard, ham, and Gruyère cheese, topped with aromatic garlic-herb butter.

Ingredients

  • 8 croissants (about 22 ounces)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1½ cups half-and-half
  • 4 ounces Gruyère cheese, divided
  • 6 slices deli ham (about 5 ounces)
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • Cooking spray
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 small garlic clove, grated
  • 2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh herbs
  • 1 pinch kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. Cut 3 ounces of Gruyère cheese into thin slices and grate the remaining 1 ounce. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, Dijon mustard, kosher salt, and black pepper until combined.
  4. Cut each croissant crosswise into 3 pieces and dip each piece into the custard before arranging in the baking dish.
  5. Pour any remaining custard over the arranged croissant pieces.
  6. Halve the ham slices, fold, and roll them into rosettes, then nestle them between the croissant pieces.
  7. Tuck the thin slices of Gruyère cheese among the croissants and sprinkle the grated Gruyère on top.
  8. Bake for 40-45 minutes until set and golden brown.
  9. In the meantime, mix the melted butter, grated garlic, herbs, and a pinch of salt in a bowl.
  10. Brush the garlic-herb butter over the bake immediately after removing from the oven and let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
