Description
A comforting layer of creamy potatoes interspersed with tender ham and melted cheese, perfect for family gatherings or cozy dinners.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 ½ cups cooked ham, diced
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- ½ cup shredded Gruyère or mozzarella cheese
- 1 ½ cups heavy cream
- ½ cup whole milk
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- ½ small onion, finely chopped (optional)
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- Salt and freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
- Pinch of nutmeg (optional)
- Chopped parsley or thyme for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and chopped onion, and sauté for 2-3 minutes until fragrant and softened.
- Sprinkle the flour over the butter mixture and whisk for about 1 minute to eliminate the raw flour taste.
- Slowly add the heavy cream and milk, whisking continuously. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook until thickened, about 5 minutes. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
- Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and layer sliced potatoes at the bottom. Add a layer of diced ham and shredded cheese. Repeat layers, finishing with cheese on top.
- Pour the cream sauce over the layers evenly.
- Cover with foil and bake for 35 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake uncovered for another 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
- Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
Slice potatoes uniformly for even cooking. You can assemble the dish a day in advance and refrigerate until ready to bake.
